12-11-08 News and Submissions

Hey guys! To begin this post, I'd like to say how awesome our Coffeehouse last Friday was. So: it was awesome. We had a lot of really good acts come out, and a lot of people showed up despite First Friday and SATs the next morning. It was, I think, a triumphant success.
We'll be posting the audio files from last year's Coffeehouse soon, so be excited about that. Eventually we'll be uploading the stuff from the recent one too, so be even more excited!
Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

On Character in Small Fruit
by Drake Tyler

In close observation of the
Temperaments of tiny fruits, one
Tends to find that as a whole
They lack in moral fiber:
Grapes are all inebriates
Soused before the afternoon;
Strawberries are lecherous,
Promiscuous, philandering;
Blackberries and Mulberries
Are common country simpletons;
Cranberries are petty thugs,
Ill-mannered and impertinent.
But one small fruit sits at the top—
The princely Blueberry.
Tiny Azure orbs of great
Respect among their fellow fruit.
Blueberries are kindly things,
Sweet as honey in hot tea,
Charming and polite in ways
Their peers have yet to see.

So, I made a mistake. Yes, the coffeehouse is on December 5th. No, that's not a Saturday. That's a Friday! Apparently people read this website and were confused by that, so I'm sorry and all that. I went back to the last news post and changed it for consistency. So, the coffeehouse was always Friday, I never made any mistakes, and Oceania was always at war with Latveria. Or something Anyway, it'll be superfun. It happens at seven p.m.
We don't have any submissions for you guys today since we're in coffeehouse grind mode (get it???), so all I have for you is this:

Hey everyone. We have some news before our submissions today, as usual. It's important to remember that the Coffeehouse is on December 5th, at seven p.m. That's a FRIDAY!. Remember to mark your calendars and request off of work and everything so you can be there. We have some solid musical acts, and there will be great poetry as well. It's only five dollars to get in, so make sure you come!

This Stranger
By Caitlin S.

He stands, grounded, walls guarding emotions.
He stands, average height. Mine comes from Grandpa.
He scowls, thick mustache quivering over teeth.
He scowls, eye lines erasing themselves into creases.

He slows, not as much energy as then.
He slows, grunts as he carries sister home.
His struggle, with fam’ly and simple things hurts me.
His struggle, is hidden from those who call, “Help!”

He slumps, a shadow of a fasting monk.
He slumps, back curved, purveyor of his pain.
He sighs, mustache long gone, eaten by disease.
He sighs, ashen, eyes gazing to oblivion.

I stand, I scowl, I slow, I slump, I sigh.
After hearing, “Your dad has cancer, Cait.”

10-30-08 Submissions & News

Hello all. Today we have two new submissions: one poem and one piece of artwork. We'll be updating every week from now on, so keep coming back every Thursday, after 4 p.m., Eastern Time.
ALSO! Auditions will be taking place on November 6th (that's next week!) for acoustic musicians in room 143 at CB East, so make sure you show up! The Coffeehouse takes place on December 5th.
One more thing: if you missed it, make sure you read last year's magazine. It's full of brilliant art and literature.
     And now, more art.

Thoughts are small winged things
By K. Thompson

My thoughts
Are little migratory birds—
Incessantly traversing
The seemingly navigable landscape
Of my mind.

Punctual
And predictable,
Always in time
With the changing seasons.
They follow a single flight plan—
The same one
They always have.

Wings beating in near perfect
Syncopation—
They soar over
Familiar landscape
Steady
And secure.

Other thoughts refuse to take flight.
No matter how I attempt to coax them
Up into the sky.
They perch, and remain perched.
Cluttering my mind with the loose feathers
Of hopes and doubts

And
Others still
Never cease flitting around
The cavernous recesses of my head.
They take to the sky without
Warning. Randomly-
they dart about.
No true origin. No planned destination. Then
Vanish
Behind a cloud of circumstance as
Suddenly
as they appeared.

So many thoughts,
Each with gleaming feathers-
multifarious shades
of brilliancy.
A symphony
of twittering voices,
each trilling for attention
In some indecipherable language.

Even the most
Veteran birdwatcher
Would last minutes at best,
Before sensory overload ensued-
In the untamed wilderness
Of my psyche.

10-16-08 News

So, Phantas is online now. Crazy, right? There are a few things I'm sure you're going to want to be updated on, but first, let's get something out of the way:

The next Coffeehouse will be taking place on December 5th! Auditions will be taking place on November 6th for acoustic musicians in room 143 at CB East, so make sure you show up if you're interested in singing/playing guitar/whatever.

Because Phantas is online now, we're going to be updating the website weekly (hopefully). Of course, how often we update is how often we have stuff to put on it.
SO! If you want to submit any of your writing (short stories, poetry) to be published on the website, submit your stuff to submissions@phantas.net. Our team of readers will decide whether to put it on the website as well as review it and e-mail commentary back to you!
For artists, you can either bring your submissions to room 143 OR e-mail it to submissions@phantas.net.

Don't forget, you can view our 2008 Phantasmagoria Magazine here. It's a PDF file, so consider yourself warned.
